Charles E. Snyder III aka Sir Wolfy

On Monday, November 9th, 2009, the Computer DJ Symposium was hosted by the Connecticut chapter of the American Disc Jockey Association. This event, featured Computer DJ expert, Charles E. Snyder III (also known as Sir Wolfy) discussing a variety of computer disc jockey related topics and Q & A. It also featured hands-on demonstrations of various DJ software, including Virtual DJ, Traktor, Torq, and Megaseg, as well as various controllers from Denon DJ, M Audio, and Hercules.

After the demonstrations, Charles sat down with a panel of his choosing for a podcast about Computer Performance Systems (or CPS), and Digital DJing. The following is that podcast; recorded live as part of the Computer DJ Symposium. In addition to Wolfy, the recording features Mike Fernino, Sean “Big Daddy” McKee, Steve “the Producer” Fernino, and a live audience of ADJA members.

Be warned! This podcast takes an extremely dry topic like computers and software for disc jockeys and makes it extremely entertaining, fun, and comical! It was also very educational and informative. Please enjoy the episode and feel free to leave feedback in the comments on PodcastForDJs.com. And don’t miss the bloopers at the end! LOL

Charles E. Snyder III is the author of several books on Computer Performance System DJing. “It’s instant taters for your ears!”

Charles E. Snyder III is one of the sharpest minds in the DJ business. I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. I have relied on his expertise time and time again where it comes to computers and website design. This podcast is yet another example of how Charles can break down the somewhat confusing language of computer DJing (for us technically challenged users) and explain it in easy-to-understand terms. This podcast was extremely informative – while also being fun and entertaining. Thank you Charles and all those who participated.

I also highly recommend getting a copy of Charles latest book “Introduction to Computer DJing & CPS” and consider being part of the hottest new DJ discussion group in the industry.

Great podcast… Just to add a note… One of the steps that I have taken to reduce heat in my laptop is to use a cooler. By placing this cooling fan under your laptop, it increases productivity by 30%. Try one. You’ll love it!

I remember at the 2005 Computer DJ Summit Meeting in Clearwater Florida, I was the only MegaSeg user present. Glad to see times have changed.

Yes, Larry. There are a lot of us Mac DJs now! I remember back around 2001-2002 arguing with Drax in the Disc Jockey America forums about that (We still zing each others platform of choice just for amusement now). Why would you want to use Mac? – Little software, no support, etc… It is nice to see times have changed. What is even nicer though, is that a large majority of the things you need to do to a PC CPS or even a PC laptop *gasp – don’t let Wolfy hear!* to make it run reliably and safely just aren’t necessary on the OSX platform. You just have to make smart choices is all.

Many will argue that a PC can be that stable and reliable (and I’ll agree, BUT…) You just have to do this, remove that, shut off this, then configure this and install that. I say why go through the trouble when I can buy a Mac off of the shelf and have it up and running in minutes reliably as a CPS with minimal effort – no driver conflicts and a predictable working relationship between the OS and the hardware.

As far as Megaseg goes. I like the program and highly recommend it to most Mac DJs except where heavy beatmixing is a concern. While Megaseg is probably the best automated playback software out there period (cocktail & dinner formats, internet radio) It still leaves much to be desired as a beatmixing software. For that I use M Audio’s Torq, which in my opinion is one of the best for beatmixing, but lacks video and automation capabilities.

Instead of using a software that does everything “good,” I use different software platforms that are “great” at what they do, but may be lacking in other areas. By combining them, I have the ultimate software functionality. And for DMX I use ShowXpress because it’s Timeline feature makes it “great” at what it does.

…And once again, that’s why I choose to use the OSX platform… because it is “great” at power-user level audio production.
